Better

It’s time to become better than we are. What are you doing to improve yourself?

Off the Clock

Geniuses are never off the clock.

The Torch

In ancient Greece, a continuous flame was maintained at the altar of the sanctuary of the goddess Hestia in Olympia. During the Olympic Games, which were dedicated to Zeus, the Father of gods and men, fires were also lit at both his temple and that of his wife, Hera. The ceremony to ignite the modern Olympic flame takes place where the temple of Hera used to stand.

Fire held a special place for the ancient Greeks, since it was held to have a divine origin. Did not Prometheus steal it from the gods and give it to men?

The Olympic flame that remains lit throughout the Olympics is the modern symbol of the Olympic Games. The Olympic torch that lights the Olympic flame was introduced by the Nazis at the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Carl Diem came up with the idea of having the torch lit at Olympia itself, and then relayed to the host country.

The Olympic Movement liked the idea so much it kept it, Nazis or no Nazis. Don’t accuse the Olympic guardians of not seeing a good branding opportunity when it comes along. So what if it’s tainted? When has the Olympic Movement ever worried about that?

The Olympic Games – the celebration of doping. Clean athletes vanished at the same time as amateurism vanished.
